The Live Earth "event" happened this week, in case you weren't paying attention. Aside from the immense pain I felt watching Al Gore trying to keep time with Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, the music and camera-work provided by HDNet was outstanding. The coolest parts of the whole production were the short films interspersed between sets. I'm wondering if any messages actually penetrated the skulls of environmental non-believers, or moved to action any already on board with the reality of global-warming...but I'm sure some good cash was raised. It seems everywhere you look "green" is in....and I fear the movement will go the way of the Iraq war, it that we hear so much of it it almost has become part of the backdrop and easy to tune out. Similarly, do we have the stomach as a nation, as a world for that matter, to truly sacrifice something for these causes (war, the environment), or are we comfortable assuming someone else will take care of it (our soldiers, the Sierra Club).
Gomez is playing on my iTunes today...dig it.

Early Summer Observations Part 2
Barry Bonds sits 9 home runs shy of Hank Aaron's record. This is arguably the greatest record in sports and no one seems to care. Granted Barry Bonds is an ass, and likely used performance enhancing drugs for at least the second half of his amazing career. Interesting though that every moment on Sportscenter seems devoted to Roger Clements' return...a guy who has been surly, difficult, a prima donna, and who just as likely used drugs during his career.
Ever searched for a condo or house to rent at the beach? Between Hilton Head and Wilmington, NC there must be an inventory of no less than 10 bajillion properties. It made my head hurt this week.
Page McConnell, former keyboardist for Phish, has a new album. Check it out. It's nice.
In case you missed it (along with virtually every other American), a team called the Anaheim Ducks won the Stanley Cup in the National Hockey League. They used be called the Mighty Ducks, after the kids movie title. Now they are just called the Ducks...maybe if they had kept the "mighty" part some kids would have watched. Like maybe 10 kids. Then 15 people would have actually seen the game.
The US Men's National Soccer Team plays Guatemala tonight in the first game of the Gold Cup, which is basically a regional championships for North, Central and South America. We are the defending champs, and bring a very different team in than competed (loosely speaking) in last summer's World Cup. New coach Bob Bradley has "brought home" several European-based players, a move former coach Bruce "I never actually played soccer very well" Arena was adverse to...relying instead on MLS talent which was often left overmatched and under experienced against world powers. If you enjoy soccer and want to learn more about the US team, pay attention over the next six weeks as most current and future national team members will be on display for the Gold Cup and immediately following Copa America.
Late night at Boone Saloon...Lovewhip is on stage. Think 80's new wave pop with a dreamy lead singer.

Early Summer Observations
We need rain here, badly. The flies are multiplying faster than rabbits on Viagra and my lawn is developing a jaundiced hue.
The NBA....sucks. Okay, there have been a few good games here and there as we come down the home stretch, but can anyone hit a shot? I was watching some old school 76'ers vs. Celtics recently and the game is almost unrecognizable compared to the crap we are subjected to for what seems like 8 months every year. Who's excited about a Cleveland vs. San Antonio final?
A friend pointed my towards State Radio this week. Awesome reggae/indie rock meets Billy Bragg band. Features former Dispatch member.
I bought The Departed about 3 months ago from my pain in the ass movie service after they sent it to me despite my returning the damn monthly card. I figured I'd keep it...Nicholson, Damon, DiCaprio, Wahlberg, Baldwin...great cast, so what the hell. So, it sat on my self for 3 months and I finally watched it this week. If you dig some violence mixed in with a cool twist on a classic mobster theme, you'll love it as much as I did.
